Descripción y detalles del examen

The Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) - Civil exam is the national licensure examination administered by NCEES for engineers seeking to become licensed Professional Engineers in the civil discipline. The exam tests your ability to apply engineering principles and judgment to real-world civil engineering problems across eight core areas: Geometrics, Hydraulics and Hydrology, Materials, Means and Methods, Project Planning, Site Development, Soil Mechanics, and Structural Mechanics. This computer-based exam consists of 123 questions, including both multiple-choice and alternative item types such as fill-in-the-blank, drag-and-drop, and scenario-based questions. It is designed for engineers who have completed an accredited engineering degree, passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, and accumulated the required qualifying work experience under a licensed PE. Candidates typically have four or more years of progressive engineering experience and are ready to demonstrate mastery of both technical knowledge and practical judgment. Passing the PE exam is a major milestone that signifies your readiness to take legal responsibility for engineering work, stamp drawings, and serve the public as a licensed professional. By earning this credential, you demonstrate competence across the full breadth of civil engineering practice, enhance your career mobility, and gain the authority to lead projects, consult independently, and mentor the next generation of engineers.

Soil Mechanics

In a short-term stability analysis of an embankment on soft clay, the geotechnical engineer is dividing the clay profile into layers. What should be assigned to each layer?

Project Planning

A civil engineering firm is comparing two construction methods. By varying the production rate of one method while keeping all other factors constant, the firm identifies the rate at which both methods have equal total cost. What is this value called?

Means and Methods

As part of a pavement design subsurface investigation, in-situ tests are performed that qualitatively reveal subgrade stratification. How should these test results be used with respect to obtaining design property values?

Materials

In a chemical process, the yield of a reaction is calculated based on the moles of desired product formed relative to what quantity?

Hydraulics and Hydrology

During a hydraulic model study, the ratio of inertia force to pressure force in the model matches that of the prototype, but the ratio of inertia force to gravity force does not. Which condition is violated?
