The Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) Mechanical: HVAC and Refrigeration exam is a comprehensive, eight-hour licensure assessment designed for engineers who have already passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam and have gained at least four years of progressive experience in the field. This exam evaluates your ability to apply engineering principles to real-world problems in heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems. It covers four primary domains: HVAC Equipment and Components (including compressors, heat exchangers, boilers, chillers, and cooling towers); HVAC Loads and Psychrometrics (calculating heating and cooling loads, understanding air properties, and applying psychrometric processes); HVAC and Refrigeration Distribution Systems (ductwork, piping, pumps, fans, and refrigerant piping design); and Supportive Knowledge (codes, standards, economics, sustainability, and system controls). The exam is open-book, allowing you to bring reference materials, and consists of 80 multiple-choice questions (40 in the morning session, 40 in the afternoon). Candidates who pass demonstrate mastery in designing, analyzing, and troubleshooting complex mechanical systems for commercial, industrial, and institutional buildings. This exam is ideal for mechanical engineers seeking professional licensure to advance their careers, take on greater responsibility, or start their own consulting practice. Gaining this credential signals to employers, clients, and regulatory bodies that you possess the technical depth and ethical grounding required to protect public health, safety, and welfare.
