The AP Human Geography exam assesses students' understanding of the systematic study of patterns and processes that have shaped human understanding, use, and alteration of Earth's surface. This college-level introductory course examines how humans organize themselves socially, culturally, politically, and economically across space. The 40-question exam, along with its free-response section, tests mastery of seven core units: thinking geographically; population and migration patterns; cultural patterns and processes; political organization of space; agricultural and rural land use; cities and urban land use; and industrial and economic development. The exam is designed for high school students seeking to demonstrate college-level achievement and earn potential credit or placement. Success on the exam signifies an ability to analyze spatial relationships, interpret maps and data, and understand the complex interplay between human societies and their environments.
