AICP - American Institute of Certified Planners Practice Test

Candidates must be current members of the American Planning Association (APA). The primary eligibility path requires a combination of education and professional planning experience: a master's degree in planning from an accredited program plus 2 years of professional experience; a bachelor's degree in planning plus 3 years; or a related bachelor's or master's degree plus 4 years. Effective preparation involves a multi-faceted approach. The APA provides the official 'AICP Exam Preparation' guide, which outlines the exam blueprint and key topics. The 'Planning Knowledge Base' is the core reference. Joining or forming a study group is highly recommended for discussion and accountability. Many candidates utilize supplemental study materials, such as online question banks and workshops offered by APA chapters or third-party providers. A successful study plan typically spans several months and includes reviewing foundational texts, practicing with scenario-based questions, and thoroughly internalizing the AICP Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct.

The AICP exam is a computer-based test consisting of 170 multiple-choice questions (150 scored, 20 unscored pretest questions) to be completed in 3.5 hours. The questions are derived from the official exam blueprint, which covers six major domains: Research and Analytics; Plan Making and Implementation; Functional Areas of Practice; Leadership and Management; Equity and Inclusion; and Ethics and Professionalism. Questions are designed to test both recall of knowledge and, more critically, the application of planning principles, ethics, and judgment to realistic practice scenarios.

The AICP Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct is the cornerstone of professional planning practice and a significant component of the exam. It outlines a planner's responsibilities to the public, clients, employers, and the profession. The Code is divided into principles that guide conduct, including our paramount responsibility to serve the public interest, our commitment to social and racial equity, and our duty to provide clear, accurate information. Exam questions frequently present ethical dilemmas, requiring candidates to select the course of action that best aligns with the Code's principles, making its thorough understanding non-negotiable for success.

AICP certification requires a commitment to continuous learning through the Certification Maintenance (CM) program. Certified planners must earn 32 CM credits every two years, including 1.5 credits in Ethics and 1.5 in Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI). Credits are earned by attending approved educational activities, such as conferences, workshops, webinars, publishing, or teaching. This requirement ensures AICP planners remain current with evolving laws, technologies, and best practices, upholding the credential's value and the planner's professional competence throughout their career.
