ARE 5.0 — Construction & Evaluation (CE) Practice Test

The actual ARE 5.0 CE exam has approximately 105 multiple-choice questions, including case study items. This practice test contains 29 questions, which is a representative sample of the key topics. It is designed to help you assess your knowledge and timing, but it is not a full-length simulation. Use it to identify weak areas, then supplement with additional practice exams and study materials.

Focus on understanding the AIA Contract Documents, especially A201 (General Conditions) and B101 (Owner-Architect Agreement). Know the difference between a change order, a construction change directive, and a minor change. Practice reviewing sample submittals and RFIs. Memorizing the flow of communication and documentation requirements is essential.

The CE exam may include basic calculations related to quantities, percentages, or time (e.g., percent complete for payment applications). However, the ARE 5.0 is computer-based and includes an on-screen calculator. You do not need to bring your own. Focus on understanding the logic behind the numbers rather than complex math.

With about 105 questions in roughly 3 hours and 45 minutes, you have approximately 2 minutes per question. For this 29-question practice test, aim to complete it in about 58 minutes to simulate real pacing. If you get stuck on a question, mark it for review and move on. You can return to it later.

The most common mistake is confusing the roles and responsibilities of the architect versus the contractor. For example, the architect observes, but the contractor controls means and methods. Another frequent error is misapplying the sequence of closeout activities (e.g., thinking a certificate of occupancy is issued before the final punch list). Pay close attention to who does what and in what order.
