CCSA (Certification in Control Self-Assessment) Practice Test

The IIA requires candidates to hold a minimum of a bachelor's degree (or equivalent) from an accredited college-level institution. Additionally, candidates must have at least one year of control-related business experience, which can include work in internal audit, risk management, quality assurance, or other relevant control, governance, or compliance functions. Proof of education and a character reference form are required as part of the application process.

While both are IIA credentials, they focus on complementary skill sets. The CIA is the comprehensive, global standard for the entire internal audit profession, covering assurance and consulting services broadly. The CCSA is a specialty certification focusing exclusively on the methodology and application of Control Self-Assessment programs. Many professionals earn the CIA as their core certification and pursue the CCSA to demonstrate deep expertise in this specific, collaborative approach to risk and control evaluation.

The CCSA exam consists of 115 multiple-choice questions to be completed within 2 hours and 55 minutes. The computer-based test is administered at Pearson VUE testing centers worldwide. The questions are divided across four domains aligned with the official CCSA exam syllabus: Fundamentals of Control Self-Assessment (15-25%), CSA Program Integration (15-25%), CSA Process Elements (35-45%), and Business Applications (15-25%).

CCSA holders are well-positioned for roles that require facilitating risk and control dialogues. Common career paths include Senior Internal Auditor, CSA Manager or Lead, Risk and Control Manager, Compliance Manager, Operational Risk Analyst, and Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GRC) Consultant. The certification is particularly valuable for professionals aiming to work in industries with heavy regulatory oversight or complex operational processes.

The CCSA certification is valid for one year from the date of award. To maintain the credential, holders must complete and report a minimum of 20 hours of Continuing Professional Education (CPE) annually, with a minimum of 10 hours directly related to control self-assessment. Failure to meet CPE requirements will result in the suspension and eventual revocation of the certification.
