CPPM: Certified Physician Practice Manager Exam

The AAPC requires candidates to have a minimum of an Associate's degree plus three years of physician practice management experience, OR a Bachelor's degree plus one year of experience. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may also be considered. The CPPM exam is a proctored, timed test consisting of 150 multiple-choice questions. Candidates are given 5 hours and 40 minutes to complete the exam. The questions are scenario-based and multiple-select, requiring critical thinking and the application of knowledge across the six core domains outlined in the official AAPC blueprint.

Hands-on experience in a practice setting is invaluable.

To maintain active CPPM status, credential holders must complete 36 continuing education units (CEUs) every two years, with a minimum of 20 CEUs related to practice management and at least 4 CEUs in ethics. CEUs must be reported to the AAPC, and annual membership dues must be paid. This maintenance requirement ensures certified managers stay current with the rapidly changing healthcare laws, technologies, and management practices.
