Fortinet NSE 4 - FortiGate Security Practice Test

Fortinet does not enforce formal prerequisites, but strongly recommends completing the associated FortiGate Security instructor-led or online training. Practical experience administering FortiGate devices (6-12 months) and a foundational understanding of networking concepts (addressed in NSE 3) are considered essential for success. The exam assumes you can navigate the FortiOS CLI and GUI effectively.

The NSE 4 certification is valid for two years from the date you pass the exam. To maintain your certified status, you must recertify by passing the current version of the NSE 4 exam before your certification expires. Alternatively, you can advance your certification path by achieving a higher-level NSE certification (NSE 5 or above), which will renew your NSE 4 status.

The exam (NSE4_FGT-7.2) typically consists of 60 multiple-choice and multiple-select questions. Candidates are allotted 105 minutes to complete the exam. The passing score is not publicly disclosed by Fortinet and may vary, as it is determined using a scaled scoring methodology that accounts for question difficulty.

Both are under the NSE 4 umbrella but focus on different domains. The FortiGate Security exam (NSE4_FGT) concentrates on threat protection and security features: IPS, Application Control, Web Filtering, VPN, and Authentication. The FortiGate Infrastructure exam (NSE4_FGI) focuses on core network and system functions: routing, HA, advanced networking, SD-WAN, and system operations. Many professionals pursue both to demonstrate comprehensive FortiGate mastery.

Hands-on practice is critical. Utilize Fortinet's official training labs if enrolled in a course. Fortinet also offers a free FortiGate VM trial for personal practice. Setting up a home lab or using a cloud-based lab environment to configure policies, VPNs, security profiles, and diagnose issues from the GUI and CLI is the most effective preparation method beyond theoretical study.
