The ICC does not enforce universal prerequisites for the E1 exam, allowing individual jurisdictions and employers to set their own requirements. The E1 exam is open book, and you must bring the specific code editions listed in the exam bulletin (typically the current or immediately prior cycle of the IRC, IBC, and NEC). Highlighting and annotating are permitted, but all notes must be in the margins of the books themselves; separate binders or notes are not allowed. Proficiency in using the index and table of contents efficiently is as important as knowing the content.

The ICC E1 exam is a computer-based test consisting of 60 multiple-choice questions. You are allotted 2 hours (120 minutes) to complete it. The questions are application-based, requiring you to use your provided code books to solve problems related to electrical plan review and field inspection scenarios. A passing score is typically 75% (45 correct answers), though ICC reserves the right to adjust the passing point based on exam psychometrics.

These are distinct but complementary roles. An electrician's license authorizes an individual to perform the physical work of installing, altering, and repairing electrical systems. The ICC E1 certification, conversely, credentials an individual to inspect and approve that work for code compliance. The inspector acts as the impartial authority enforcing the adopted safety codes, requiring a broader focus on code interpretation, legal authority, and review of completed installations against the minimum standards.

ICC certifications require ongoing professional development to maintain active status. The E1 credential must be renewed every three years. To renew, you must earn a minimum of 1.5 Continuing Education Units (CEUs), equivalent to 15 contact hours of approved training. These CEUs must be relevant to the certification category (electrical, building, etc.). You must also submit a renewal application and fee to ICC before your certification expiration date to avoid lapse and potential reinstatement requirements.
