PPAT (Principles of Learning and Teaching Assessment) — ETS Practice Test

This practice test mirrors the content and format of the official PPAT but is not an exact copy. It covers the same four domains and uses similar question types, but the questions are original and designed for diagnostic purposes. It helps you identify areas for further study before you take the official assessment.

No. The test focuses on application, not memorization. You do not need to recall the names of theorists or specific studies. Instead, you need to understand core principles such as formative assessment cycles, scaffolding, differentiation strategies, and how to analyze student work to inform instruction.

Review each incorrect answer carefully and note the domain it falls under. Then, focus your study time on that domain. For example, if you missed several questions about assessing student learning, revisit how to design rubrics, use exit tickets, and interpret assessment data to adjust instruction. Use the results to create a targeted study plan.

Since there are 51 questions, aim for about 1.5 to 2 minutes per question on average. Some scenario-based questions may take longer. If you get stuck, mark the question and move on. You can return to it if time permits. Practicing pacing is as important as practicing content.

This practice test is designed for all grade levels. The principles of teaching and learning-such as differentiation, assessment, and instructional planning-apply across K-12 settings. The scenarios may vary by grade band, but the underlying pedagogical concepts are universal.
