The FAA Aviation Mechanic Powerplant Written Knowledge Test is a critical component of the Federal Aviation Administration's certification process for Powerplant Mechanics (Airframe and Powerplant, or A&P, with Powerplant rating). This comprehensive examination validates a candidate's theoretical knowledge of aircraft powerplant systems, including reciprocating and turbine engines, engine fuel and control systems, induction and exhaust systems, ignition and starting systems, lubrication systems, cooling systems, propellers, and engine fire protection systems. Successfully passing this computer-based test, along with the General and Airframe written exams, is a mandatory prerequisite for obtaining the FAA's Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) Mechanic Certificate with a Powerplant rating. This certification is the federal license required to perform maintenance, repairs, alterations, and inspections on aircraft powerplants, signifying to employers and the aviation industry that the holder possesses the foundational knowledge mandated by federal regulation (14 CFR Part 65). Earning this certification opens doors to careers with airlines, maintenance repair and overhaul (MRO) organizations, fixed-base operators (FBOs), and corporate aviation fleets worldwide.
