AABB Transfusion Medicine Specialist Practice Test

Candidates must hold an MD, DO, PhD, or equivalent doctoral degree from an accredited institution. MD/DO candidates must also hold a current, active, unrestricted license to practice medicine and have completed a fellowship in blood banking/transfusion medicine or documented equivalent training/experience. PhD candidates must have at least five years of professional experience in transfusion medicine or blood banking. All candidates must provide documentation of their qualifications for review by the AABB Certification Committee.

While both are advanced credentials, the TM certification is designed for physicians (MD/DO) and doctoral-level scientists (PhD) who often hold directorial, managerial, or highly specialized consultative roles. The SBB certification is typically pursued by medical laboratory scientists with a master's or bachelor's degree who are experts in the technical and operational aspects of the blood bank. The TM exam places greater emphasis on medical management, therapeutic apheresis decision-making, complex clinical consultation, and overarching regulatory/quality systems leadership.

The exam is a computer-based test consisting of approximately 200 multiple-choice questions, to be completed within a 4-hour testing window. Questions are primarily scenario-based, requiring application of knowledge. The exam is scored using a criterion-referenced method, where a passing standard is set by a panel of subject matter experts. Results are reported as 'Pass' or 'Fail'; numerical scores are not provided.

The AABB Transfusion Medicine Specialist certification is valid for ten years. Recertification can be achieved either by retaking and passing the current certification exam or by earning a minimum of 75 continuing education (CE) credits in relevant transfusion medicine topics during the ten-year cycle. A portion of these CEs must be Category 1 (AMA PRA, ACCME, or ACPE). Detailed documentation of CE activities is required for the portfolio-based recertification pathway.
