ABE Endodontics Board Certification Practice Test

Candidates must hold a valid dental license in a U.S. jurisdiction or Canada, and must have successfully completed an advanced education program in endodontics accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA). Additionally, candidates must be in the active clinical practice of endodontics. It is mandatory to initiate the certification process within five years of completing your endodontic residency program.

The certification process is sequential and consists of three primary components: 1) The Qualifying Examination (written), which tests broad knowledge across the endodontic curriculum; 2) The Oral Examination, which assesses diagnostic acumen, treatment planning, and clinical judgment through case-based discussions; and 3) The Case Defense, where the candidate submits and defends detailed documentation of a range of personally treated cases before a panel of examiners. All sections must be passed to achieve Diplomate status.

Membership in the AAE signifies affiliation with the professional organization for the specialty. ABE Board Certification is a separate, independent credentialing achievement that involves a rigorous peer-evaluation and examination process. While many AAE members are board-eligible, only those who successfully complete the entire ABE examination sequence earn the distinction of 'Diplomate, American Board of Endodontics.'

The process is designed to be completed within a five-year cycle from the time of application. It requires sustained effort, including extensive preparation for the written exam, meticulous gathering and preparation of case documentation over several years of practice, and dedicated study for the oral defense. Most candidates spend multiple years preparing their case portfolios and studying intensively for each examination stage.

To maintain Diplomate status, individuals must participate in the ABE's Continuous Certification program. This involves ongoing scholarly activity, periodic self-assessment, and a commitment to lifelong learning. Diplomates must also adhere to the ABE's Code of Ethics and may be required to complete recertification activities on a decennial cycle to demonstrate the continued currency of their knowledge and skills.
