ABIM Clinical Lipidology Certification Exam Practice Test

Candidates must hold a current, valid ABIM certification in Internal Medicine, Cardiology, Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism, Nephrology, or Transplant Hepatology. Additionally, they must have completed a minimum of 12 months of formal training in clinical lipidology (e.g., a dedicated fellowship) OR demonstrate equivalent practice experience in the field, as outlined in the ABIM's policies. All candidates must maintain a valid, unrestricted medical license.

The ABIM certification is a physician-focused, board certification granted by the American Board of Internal Medicine, carrying the weight and recognition of traditional medical specialty boards. It is often required for specific academic and hospital-based leadership roles. The NLA's Clinical Lipid Specialist (CLS) credential, while highly respected, is a proficiency certification open to a broader range of healthcare providers (physicians, pharmacists, nurses, dietitians). Many experts pursue both credentials to demonstrate comprehensive expertise and interdisciplinary engagement.

The exam is a computer-based test consisting of multiple-choice, single-best-answer questions. It typically contains approximately 200-220 questions to be completed within a single, full-day testing session (often 5-6 hours of exam time, plus breaks). The questions are designed to assess clinical judgment, diagnostic reasoning, and management strategies across the entire blueprint of topics.

The ABIM Clinical Lipidology certification is time-limited and must be maintained through the ABIM's Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. This involves ongoing engagement in four core components: 1) Maintaining a valid medical license, 2) Earning continuing medical education (CME) and MOC points, 3) Passing a secure exam (or completing an alternative assessment pathway) before the certification expires, and 4) Engaging in practice assessment activities. While the exam covers all blueprint topics comprehensively, significant emphasis is placed on 'Pharmacologic Lipid-Lowering Therapy' (including PCSK9 inhibitors, bempedoic acid, and novel agents), 'Atherosclerosis Pathogenesis and Risk Assessment' (with focus on risk enhancers and CAC scoring), and 'Genetic Dyslipidemias' (such as FH, FCS, and dysbetalipoproteinemia). 'Patient Adherence and Shared Decision-Making' is also a critical, cross-cutting theme integrated into many clinical scenarios.
