ACVIM Veterinary Oncology Specialty Exam Practice Test

Candidates must first successfully complete an ACVIM-approved residency in Oncology, typically lasting 3-4 years following a one-year internship or equivalent practice experience. This must be under the supervision of an ACVIM Oncology Diplomate. Additionally, candidates must have published first-author, peer-reviewed research and pass the ACVIM General Examination (covering core internal medicine) before being eligible to sit for the Oncology Specialty Certifying Examination. The certifying examination is a comprehensive, one-day written exam. It consists of multiple-choice and multiple-answer questions designed to assess applied knowledge across the entire specialty blueprint. Content is rigorously mapped to domains including Fundamentals of Cancer Biology, Diagnostic Oncology (imaging, cytology, histopathology), Disease Management by tumor type (including hematologic, solid, and round cell tumors), Modality-Specific Therapy (chemotherapy, radiation, surgery, immunotherapy), and Supportive/Palliative Care. Questions often present complex case scenarios requiring integrated diagnostic and therapeutic decision-making.

ACVIM Diplomate status is a professional specialty certification, not a separate state license. You must maintain an active veterinary license in your state/province of practice. However, many states have specific regulations regarding the use of the title 'Veterinary Oncologist' or 'Specialist,' which typically require board certification from an AVMA-recognized specialty college like the ACVIM. Certification is essential for legal and ethical use of the specialist title and for receiving referrals from general practitioners.

Successful preparation is built upon a foundation of residency training notes, core textbooks (e.g., 'Withrow and MacEwen's Small Animal Clinical Oncology,' 'Veterinary Medical Oncology'), and current peer-reviewed literature. The ACVIM provides a detailed exam blueprint which is the essential study guide. Most candidates form study groups, utilize question banks focused on applied knowledge, and systematically review journal articles from the past 3-5 years. Participating in review courses offered by academic institutions or professional organizations is also a common and highly recommended strategy.

ACVIM Diplomates must maintain their certification through a rigorous Continuing Education (CE) and professional activity program. This includes earning a minimum number of CE credits specific to oncology and internal medicine over a multi-year cycle, with a portion required to be ACVIM-approved. Diplomates must also remain actively engaged in the practice, teaching, or research of veterinary internal medicine/oncology and adhere to the ACVIM Code of Ethics. Failure to meet these requirements can result in the loss of active Diplomate status.
