AIIM Certified Information Professional (CIP) Practice Test

AIIM recommends that candidates have at least 3-5 years of professional experience in an information-related role, such as records management, content management, IT, compliance, or business analysis. While there are no formal academic prerequisites, a solid understanding of core business processes and exposure to information systems is essential. The exam is designed for practicing professionals who can apply concepts to real-world scenarios.

The CIP is broader and more holistic. While the IGP focuses deeply on governance, risk, and compliance frameworks, and the CDMP centers on data management and quality, the CIP encompasses the entire information lifecycle. It integrates governance with practical disciplines like capture, workflow automation, storage, retrieval, and analytics, providing a comprehensive view of managing both structured and unstructured information as an enterprise asset.

The CIP exam is a computer-based test consisting of approximately 100 multiple-choice and scenario-based questions, to be completed within 90 minutes. Questions are weighted, and the scoring is on a scaled basis, with a passing score set by AIIM's psychometric analysis. The exam is proctored and can be taken online or at authorized testing centers. Results are provided immediately upon completion.

The primary resource is the official AIIM CIP Body of Knowledge and the associated study guide. AIIM offers official training courses, webinars, and practice tests. Supplementing with foundational textbooks on information governance, enterprise content management, and relevant ISO standards (e.g., ISO 15489, ISO 30301) is highly recommended. Engaging with AIIM's community and publications also provides valuable contemporary context.

The CIP certification is valid for three years. To maintain the credential, professionals must earn 45 continuing professional education (CPE) credits within that three-year cycle. CPE credits can be obtained through activities such as attending relevant training, conferences, webinars, publishing articles, teaching courses, or participating in professional committees. This ensures CIP holders remain current in a rapidly evolving field.
