ANCC Family Nurse Practitioner Board Certification (FNP-BC) Practice Test

Eligibility requires: 1) A current, active RN license in the U.S. or its territories, 2) A master's, post-graduate certificate, or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) from an accredited FNP program, 3) Completion of a minimum of 500 faculty-supervised clinical hours within your FNP program, and 4) Successful completion of graduate-level coursework in advanced physiology/pathophysiology, health assessment, and pharmacology. All official transcripts and clinical hour verification must be submitted with the application.

While both the ANCC and the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board (AANPCB) offer nationally recognized FNP certifications, there are philosophical and structural differences. The ANCC exam traditionally places a stronger emphasis on nursing theory, research, evidence-based practice, and professional role/ethics within its question blueprint. The AANPCB exam is often described as having a more focused clinical/pathophysiology emphasis. Both are valid for licensure and credentialing; the choice often depends on individual academic preparation, learning style, and professional alignment.

The ANCC FNP-BC exam is a computer-based test consisting of 175 scored questions, plus 25 pretest questions that are unscored. Candidates have 3.5 hours to complete the exam. The questions are primarily multiple-choice with four answer options, but may also include multiple-response (select all that apply), drag-and-drop, and hot spot (point to an area on an image) formats. The exam is designed to assess cognitive levels of knowledge, comprehension, application, and analysis.

The exam content is derived from a detailed test blueprint. The primary domains and their approximate weightings are: Assessment and Diagnosis (25%), Clinical Management (30%), Professional Role and Policy (20%), and Health Promotion and Disease Prevention (25%). These domains integrate foundational sciences, pharmacotherapeutics, and evidence-based practice across the lifespan from pediatric to geriatric patients.

The FNP-BC certification is valid for five years. Maintenance requires meeting the ANCC's Renewal by Continuing Education and Professional Development model. This involves accruing a minimum of 75 contact hours of continuing education in the FNP specialty, 25 of which must be in pharmacotherapeutics. Additionally, you must fulfill one of eight professional development categories (e.g., academic credits, presentations, publications, preceptorship, or practice hours) and complete a minimum of 1,000 clinical practice hours within the five-year renewal cycle.
