Exam overview and details

The AP Environmental Science (APES) exam is a comprehensive assessment of your understanding of the scientific principles, concepts, and methodologies required to analyze environmental challenges. Administered by the College Board, this 3-hour exam evaluates your ability to identify and analyze environmental problems, evaluate the relative risks associated with these problems, and examine alternative solutions for resolving or preventing them. The exam consists of 80 multiple-choice questions (60% of score) and 3 free-response questions (40% of score), including one document-based question, one data-set question, and one synthesis and evaluation question. It is designed for high school students who have completed a year-long, college-level environmental science course. Success on the exam demonstrates college-level competency and can earn you college credit and placement, providing a strong foundation for further study in environmental science, policy, biology, engineering, or related fields.

Aquatic and Terrestrial Pollution

A wastewater plant serving a mountain resort town screens trash, lets solids settle, uses microbes to break down organic matter, and disinfects before discharge. Which step uses microbes?

Exam insights and study advice

Environmental science is not an abstract academic discipline; it is the critical framework for understanding and addressing the most pressing issues of our time. From climate change and biodiversity loss to water scarcity and sustainable energy, the concepts tested on this exam are directly applicable to global policy debates, local community planning, and personal decision-making. Mastering this material equips you with the scientific literacy needed to evaluate environmental claims, participate meaningfully in civic discussions, and pursue careers that will shape a more sustainable future. The interdisciplinary nature of the subject-bridging biology, chemistry, geology, and economics-develops a systems-thinking mindset invaluable in any professional field.
