AP Research Practice Test

The practice test does not require you to write a full paper. Instead, it uses scenario-based questions that present excerpts, research questions, or data sets. You will be asked to identify the most appropriate structure for a literature review, evaluate the strength of a methodology section, or choose the best way to synthesize conflicting findings. These questions assess your understanding of paper components without requiring the full writing process.

Focus on understanding the dynamics of collaborative research. Review common team roles (e.g., leader, recorder, skeptic), strategies for resolving conflicts, and methods for transforming raw data into a coherent presentation. Practice explaining how you would adapt a research finding for different audiences (e.g., academic vs. public). The key is to show that you can both contribute to a team and independently transmit findings.

Read each perspective carefully and identify the underlying assumptions, biases, and evidence used. Look for questions that ask you to compare perspectives, find common ground, or identify a perspective that is missing. A useful strategy is to mentally map each perspective to a stakeholder group (e.g., scientist, policymaker, community member) to understand their motivations.

While no official time limit is enforced for this practice version, we recommend simulating exam conditions by allowing approximately 90 minutes for the 133 questions. This mirrors the pacing of the actual AP Research exam. If you need more time for deep analysis, take it, but note which questions slow you down so you can improve your speed.
