ARE 5.0 Project Management Division Practice Test

While other divisions like Practice Management (PcM) focus on firm operations and Construction & Evaluation (CE) focus on technical execution, the PjM division centers on the management of a single architectural project from inception to completion. Its core focus is on the processes, contracts, team dynamics, financial controls, risk mitigation, and delivery methods specific to guiding a project successfully to its conclusion, ensuring alignment with client objectives and regulatory requirements.

NCARB strongly recommends gaining substantial AXP (Architectural Experience Program) hours in relevant project management categories before sitting for the exam. Most candidates benefit from having direct experience in tasks such as contract administration, consultant coordination, budgeting, and scheduling. This practical experience is invaluable for contextualizing the exam's scenario-based questions, which often require judgment calls rooted in professional practice.

Mastery of specific documents is crucial. These include the AIA Family of Documents (particularly A101, B101, A201, and G702/703), NCARB's Rules of Conduct and professional standards, and fundamental concepts from the Project Management Institute (PMI). You must understand the roles, responsibilities, and risk allocations defined in these contracts, as well as the ethical and procedural guidelines governing architectural practice.

The PjM division is a 4-hour and 15-minute computer-based test. It typically consists of 85 scored multiple-choice questions and may include several case studies with associated questions. The interface includes various item types such as standard multiple-choice, check-all-that-apply, and questions requiring you to click on areas in an exhibit. A scheduled break is included in the total time.

The exam integrates sustainability and evolving delivery methods as core components of modern project management. Candidates are tested on managing projects using Integrated Project Delivery (IPD), Design-Build, and other collaborative methods. Furthermore, questions assess the ability to manage sustainability goals, certification processes (like LEED or WELL), and the associated costs, schedules, and team coordination required to achieve them.
