ASNT NDT Level II Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) Practice Test

ASNT requires a combination of formal training hours and documented work experience. The specific requirements depend on your education level. For example, a high school graduate typically needs a minimum of 1,300 hours of MT experience and 40 hours of formal training. You must provide proof of these prerequisites to your employer or an ASNT-recognized agency administering the exam.

The exam typically consists of two parts: a General exam covering basic NDT principles and a Specific exam focused solely on Magnetic Particle Testing. Each part usually contains 40-50 multiple-choice questions. The total testing time is often around 2-3 hours, but this can vary by examination agency. Some agencies may also include a practical demonstration.

The ASNT Level II MT exam is a closed-book examination. You are not permitted to bring reference materials into the testing area. You must rely on your knowledge and understanding of the subject matter.

The single most important document is the current edition of ASTM E1444, 'Standard Practice for Magnetic Particle Testing.' This standard forms the core of the exam's technical content. Your study should be deeply rooted in this document, supplemented by your training course materials and the ASNT Recommended Practice No. SNT-TC-1A or CP-105 (as applicable).

A 50/50 balance is ideal. Dedicate significant time to understanding electromagnetic theory, types of magnetization (longitudinal, circular, prod, yoke), and particle types. Equally, study the step-by-step requirements of a procedure: pre-cleaning, magnetization methods, interpretation of relevant vs. non-relevant indications, post-cleaning, and documentation. Practice questions that require you to select the correct technique for a given part geometry.
