ASQ Certified Quality Engineer (CQE) Practice Test

ASQ requires candidates to have a combination of education and work experience. With a four-year degree, you need 8 years of on-the-job experience in one or more areas of the CQE Body of Knowledge, with at least 3 years in a decision-making position. With a two-year degree or no degree, 10 years of experience is required, with at least 3 years in a decision-making role. Experience must be verifiable.

The CQE exam is a 175-question, multiple-choice test administered over a 5.5-hour period (including a brief tutorial). Of these, 160 are scored, and 15 are unscored pretest questions. The exam is closed-book, though ASQ provides a specific reference sheet of formulas and tables. The passing score is not a fixed percentage but is determined through a psychometric process and typically requires demonstrating proficiency across all sections of the Body of Knowledge.

The CQE is a technically focused engineering certification centered on product and process quality control, statistical methods, and reliability. The Certified Six Sigma Green Belt (CSSGB) focuses specifically on DMAIC methodology for process improvement. The Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence (CMQ/OE) is a leadership-focused certification covering strategic planning, organizational dynamics, and team facilitation. The CQE is often a prerequisite or complementary credential for more senior technical or management roles.

The CQE certification is valid for three years. To recertify, you must earn 18 recertification units (RUs) during that three-year period. RUs can be earned through professional activities such as continuing education, work experience, publishing articles, presenting at conferences, or participating in professional organizations. This process ensures certified professionals remain current in the evolving field of quality engineering.

Effective preparation involves a multi-faceted approach: 1) Thoroughly review the official ASQ CQE Body of Knowledge to understand all topic areas. 2) Use the primary reference, *The Certified Quality Engineer Handbook*, as a core study guide. 3) Supplement with other textbooks and resources on statistics, reliability, and control plans. 4) Solve numerous practice problems to build speed and accuracy, especially for quantitative sections. 5) Consider joining a study group or enrolling in a formal preparation course. 6) Schedule the exam only after you consistently score well on full-length practice tests.
