While there are no formal experience prerequisites to register for the exam, ATD strongly recommends that candidates have at least five years of professional work experience in the talent development field. The exam content is designed for practicing professionals, and the skills application exam (work product) requires the submission of an artifact from an actual, completed project. Most successful candidates find that 3-5 years of hands-on experience is essential to contextualize the knowledge and successfully complete both exam components.

The CPLP is distinct in its scope and rigor. Unlike vendor-specific or single-topic certifications, the CPLP is a broad, practitioner-based credential that covers the entire talent development lifecycle as defined by the ATD Capability Model. It validates both knowledge (via a proctored exam) and the application of skills (via a work product submission). This two-part structure ensures certified professionals can translate theory into practice. The CPLP certification consists of two separate assessments. First, the Knowledge Exam is a computer-based, 180-question test (150 scored, 30 pretest) covering all ten capability areas. Second, the Skills Application Exam requires candidates to submit a work product (e.g., a design document, evaluation plan, or consulting analysis) that demonstrates competency in selected areas, followed by written responses to scenario-based questions. The CPLP credential is valid for three years from the date it is awarded. To maintain the certification, holders must earn 60 recertification points over the three-year cycle through professional development activities. These points can be accrued by attending educational events (like ATD conferences or chapters), publishing content, presenting at industry events, earning other relevant credentials, or engaging in professional service. This requirement ensures CPLP holders remain current with evolving industry practices and standards.
