CPCE - Counselor Preparation Comprehensive Examination

The CPCE is a 160-item, multiple-choice examination. Of these, 136 are scored items, and 24 are non-scored pilot questions interspersed throughout the test. The questions are distributed across the eight CACREP (2016) common core areas: Professional Counseling Orientation and Ethical Practice (16 items), Social and Cultural Diversity (16 items), Human Growth and Development (16 items), Career Development (16 items), Counseling and Helping Relationships (20 items), Group Counseling and Group Work (16 items), Assessment and Testing (16 items), and Research and Program Evaluation (16 items). The exam is administered in a proctored, computer-based format over a 3-hour and 45-minute testing period.

While both exams are developed by the CCE and based on CACREP standards, they serve distinct purposes. The CPCE is an academic exit exam typically taken during a student's final year of a master's program to assess comprehensive knowledge before graduation. The NCE is a credentialing exam used for national certification (NCC) and, in many states, for licensure (LPC, etc.). The content domains are similar, but the NCE is a high-stakes professional credentialing test. Many students take the CPCE as a formative assessment and key preparation step for later taking the NCE.

The CPCE uses a scaled scoring system, with scores typically ranging from 99 to 200. There is no universal passing score; each participating university sets its own minimum passing scaled score based on recommendations from the CCE and its internal policies. Candidates should consult their specific academic program for the required passing score. The score report provides a total scaled score and separate sub-scores for each of the eight core areas to help identify strengths and areas for improvement.

Effective preparation involves a multi-faceted approach: 1) Conduct a thorough self-assessment using your graduate transcripts and coursework to identify weaker content areas. 2) Utilize official preparation resources, such as the "CPCE Study Guide" from the CCE and the "Encyclopedia of Counseling" by Howard Rosenthal. 3) Form or join a study group to discuss concepts and practice questions. 4) Complete multiple full-length practice exams under timed conditions to build stamina and familiarity with the question format. 5) Focus on understanding core theories, ethical codes (ACA), assessment concepts, and research methodologies rather than rote memorization. Systematic review over 2-3 months is generally more effective than cramming.

Score reports are typically released to the candidate's institution approximately 4-6 weeks after the exam administration date. The institution then distributes the reports to students. The individual score report provides a total scaled score, the program's required passing score (if provided by the institution), and an indication of Pass/Fail. Crucially, it also includes a diagnostic profile showing the candidate's performance in each of the eight CACREP core areas, which is invaluable for targeted study if a retake is necessary or for preparing for the NCE.
