CCRN-K - Acute Care Certified Nurse (Knowledge) Practice Test

The traditional CCRN certification requires a specific number of direct clinical practice hours caring for acutely/critically ill patients. The CCRN-K is designed for nurses who have a strong foundation in critical care knowledge but work in roles that do not involve direct bedside care, such as educators, managers, clinical nurse specialists, researchers, or informatics specialists. Both exams test the same body of knowledge; the distinction lies in the practice requirement pathway to sit for the exam.

The ideal candidate is a registered nurse who influences acute and critical care patient outcomes indirectly. This includes nurse educators, managers, directors, clinical nurse specialists, quality improvement specialists, researchers, informatics nurses, and clinical liaisons. These professionals must possess a deep understanding of critical care principles to effectively develop policies, educate staff, manage units, analyze data, or improve systems that directly impact patient care.

The CCRN-K is highly regarded by healthcare employers and often serves as a key criterion for advancement into leadership, education, and advanced specialty roles. It demonstrates a validated expertise that can lead to promotions, increased responsibility, higher salary potential, and greater professional influence. It establishes the nurse as a subject matter expert, opening doors to roles in administration, program development, and organizational leadership.

Candidates must hold a current, unencumbered RN or APRN license in the United States. Unlike the CCRN, there is no requirement for direct clinical practice hours. However, candidates must meet one of two pathways: 1) Have completed 1,750 hours in a knowledge-based role impacting acute/critically ill adult patients within the last two years, or 2) Have completed 2,000 hours in such a role within the last five years, with at least 875 hours accrued in the most recent year preceding application.

The CCRN-K exam is a computer-based test consisting of 125 multiple-choice questions (100 scored, 25 unscored pretest items). Candidates have 2.5 hours to complete it. The content is derived from the AACN CCRN exam blueprint, covering Clinical Judgment (80% of questions) across Cardiovascular, Pulmonary, Endocrine, Hematology/Immunology, Neurology, Gastrointestinal, Renal, and Multisystem domains, and Professional Caring and Ethical Practice (20% of questions).
