NAADAC Certified Clinical Supervisor Exam Practice Test

Candidates must hold a current, active license or certification as a substance use disorder or addiction counselor (or equivalent). They must also have a minimum of three years (6,000 hours) of full-time post-licensure/certification clinical experience in addiction treatment, including at least 200 hours of documented clinical supervision training and 100 hours of supervised supervision experience. The exam consists of 120 multiple-choice questions, of which 100 are scored and 20 are unscored pretest items. Candidates have three hours to complete the computer-based test. Questions are derived from the official Exam Blueprint and cover six primary domains: Counselor Development, Professional and Ethical Standards, Program Development and Quality Assurance, Administration, and Evaluation. The format emphasizes application and analysis over simple recall.

The single most important document is the NAADAC 'Clinical Supervision Exam Blueprint' (also known as the Task List). This blueprint outlines the precise knowledge areas and tasks covered on the exam, including their weighted percentage. NAADAC also offers a recommended reading list and may provide study guides or preparation workshops. Aligning your study plan directly with the blueprint domains is the most strategic approach to preparation.

A state license/endorsement is a legal requirement to practice supervision within that specific jurisdiction, governed by state law and board rules. The NAADAC CCS is a voluntary national certification that signifies mastery of a nationally recognized set of competencies. It is portable across states and is often used by employers and payers as a mark of quality assurance. Many professionals obtain both their state credential and the national CCS to maximize their credentials.

The CCS credential must be renewed every two years. Requirements include maintaining your underlying counseling license/certification, earning 40 hours of continuing education specifically in clinical supervision (or related domains as defined by NAADAC), and paying the recertification fee. A portion of the CE hours must be in ethics. Documentation of these requirements must be submitted to NAADAC to maintain active certified status.
