CEN - Certified Emergency Nurse Practice Test

To be eligible for the CEN examination, you must hold a current, unrestricted RN license in the United States, its territories, or Canada. While BCEN does not mandate a specific amount of clinical experience, it is strongly recommended that candidates have at least two years of full-time experience in emergency nursing to ensure familiarity with the breadth and depth of content covered on the exam.

CEN certification is valid for four years. You can renew your credential by either retaking and passing the CEN examination or by meeting the requirements for the continuing education (CE) renewal option, which involves earning a minimum of 100 contact hours of approved continuing education relevant to emergency nursing during the four-year certification period.

The CEN exam is a computer-based test consisting of 175 multiple-choice questions. Of these, 150 are scored, and 25 are unscored pretest questions. Candidates are given 3 hours to complete the examination. The questions are designed to test application and analysis of knowledge in clinical scenarios.

The CEN certifies comprehensive knowledge across the entire scope of emergency nursing practice for patients of all ages, from medical and psychiatric emergencies to environmental crises. The Trauma Certified Registered Nurse (TCRN) credential, also from BCEN, focuses specifically on the in-depth knowledge required for optimal care of the trauma patient across the continuum, from prehospital through resuscitation and stabilization. Many emergency nurses hold both certifications to demonstrate expertise in both general emergency and specialized trauma care.
