CHRP: Certified Human Resources Professional Exam (Canada) Practice Test

The path to the CHRP involves three core pillars: 1) Academic Requirement: Completion of specific HR courses from an HRPA-approved institution or equivalent. 2) Examination Requirement: Passing the National Knowledge Exam (NKE), which tests theoretical knowledge. 3) Experience & Final Assessment: After gaining relevant HR work experience, candidates must pass the National Professional Practice Assessment (NPPA), a capstone exam evaluating the application of knowledge in practice. Additionally, all candidates must adhere to the HRPA's Code of Ethics and Rules of Professional Conduct.

The CHRP is the original and most widely recognized national HR certification in Canada, with a specific and mandatory focus on Canadian employment law, regulations, and context. Other designations, like the CPHR in Western Canada or international certifications (e.g., SHRM-CP, PHR), have different competency frameworks, legal emphases, or governance structures. The CHRP's curriculum and exams are uniquely tailored to the Canadian legal and business environment, making it the gold standard for HR practice within the country.

The NKE is a computer-based, multiple-choice exam consisting of approximately 150 questions to be completed within 3.5 hours. Questions are based on the HRPA's required professional capability (RPC) framework and cover all nine functional areas. The exam employs a combination of knowledge recall and scenario-based application questions designed to test a candidate's understanding and ability to apply concepts in practical situations. A scaled passing score is required, and results are reported as Pass/Fail.

Work experience is not required to attempt the National Knowledge Exam (NKE). You can write the NKE upon meeting the academic course requirements. However, to be awarded the full CHRP designation, you must complete the experience requirement (typically three years of professional-level HR experience) and successfully pass the subsequent National Professional Practice Assessment (NPPA). The NPPA specifically assesses the application of your knowledge in a professional context.

The CHRP designation requires ongoing maintenance to ensure professionals remain current. Holders must complete a minimum of 66.5 Continuing Professional Development (CPD) hours over a three-year cycle. These hours must be logged and reported to the HRPA and should align with the CHRP competency framework. Activities include formal courses, conferences, webinars, professional reading, and other approved learning relevant to the HR profession. Maintaining your CPD is mandatory to retain your certified status in good standing.
