CPAN Certified Post Anesthesia Nurse Practice Test

Candidates must hold a current, unrestricted RN license. They need a minimum of 1,800 hours of direct perianesthesia clinical experience within the past two years, with at least 600 of those hours specifically in Phase I (PACU) care. Experience must be verified by a supervisor or colleague. Full details and application are managed through the American Board of Perianesthesia Nursing Certification (ABPANC).

Both are offered by ABPANC but focus on different practice settings. The CPAN certification validates expertise specifically in Phase I (immediate post-anesthesia) care, typically in an inpatient or hospital-based PACU. The CAPA certification focuses on the broader spectrum of perianesthesia care across all phases (preoperative, Phase I, Phase II, and extended observation), with a stronger emphasis on ambulatory and outpatient settings. Many nurses choose to become dual-certified (CPAN and CAPA).

The CPAN exam is a computer-based test consisting of 165 multiple-choice questions. Of these, 150 are scored, and 15 are unscored pretest questions. Candidates are given 3 hours to complete the exam. The questions are designed to assess application, analysis, and evaluation of clinical scenarios across the eight core content domains outlined in the test blueprint.

While not universally a legal requirement for employment, CPAN certification is increasingly becoming a preferred or required qualification for PACU positions, especially for senior, lead, or managerial roles. Many Magnet(R)-designated and other high-performing healthcare institutions actively seek and incentivize certified nurses, as it demonstrates a commitment to specialty competency and improves facility quality metrics.

CPAN certification is valid for three years. Recertification can be achieved either by retaking the examination or by completing a minimum of 100 contact hours of continuing education relevant to perianesthesia nursing practice during the three-year cycle. Specific categories of CE are required, and all recertification activities must be documented and submitted to ABPANC for approval.
