CSET Science Subtest II: Life Sciences (Biology/Life Science) Practice Test

The exam consists of approximately 50 multiple-choice questions and 3-4 constructed-response (short essay) questions. It is a computer-based test administered in a single 2-hour and 30-minute session, plus 15 minutes for a computer-based tutorial. The constructed-response questions require candidates to demonstrate depth of knowledge by explaining biological processes, analyzing data, or designing instructional segments, assessing both content mastery and pedagogical application.

The test blueprint is explicitly designed to reflect the disciplinary core ideas (DCIs) of the NGSS for Life Sciences, including LS1: From Molecules to Organisms, LS2: Ecosystems, LS3: Heredity, and LS4: Biological Evolution. Questions assess understanding of these core ideas integrated with scientific and engineering practices (e.g., data analysis, argument from evidence) and crosscutting concepts (e.g., patterns, cause and effect). Success requires demonstrating knowledge as it is expected to be taught in a modern, three-dimensional science classroom.

The primary outcome is eligibility for a California Single Subject Teaching Credential in Foundational-Level General Science or, when combined with other subtests, a full Science credential. This is required to teach biology, life science, integrated science, and related courses in California public middle and high schools. It is a non-negotiable prerequisite for hiring in these roles and is recognized by all public and most private school districts in the state as the standard for subject-matter competence.

Successful strategy involves: 1) Practicing with official prompts to understand the expectation for detail and clarity. 2) Structuring responses with clear thesis statements, logical progression of ideas, and use of precise biological terminology. 3) Integrating multiple concepts (e.g., linking cellular respiration to ecosystem energy flow). 4) Managing time effectively during the exam to allow for planning, writing, and reviewing responses. Focus on demonstrating both 'what' you know and 'how' you would explain or apply it in an educational context.

The CSET passing scores themselves do not expire. However, they are used as part of an application for a teaching credential, which has its own renewal cycle (typically every 5 years). Credential renewal involves completing ongoing professional development and continuing education units (CEUs) as mandated by the CTC. The underlying CSET certification, once passed, fulfills the subject-matter competence requirement indefinitely for credential applications.
