CVPM: Certified Veterinary Practice Manager Exam

Candidates must meet specific criteria in both education and experience. You need a minimum of three years of full-time experience (or equivalent part-time) as a veterinary practice manager within the past ten years. Additionally, you must have completed 30 hours of continuing education (CE) in management-related topics within the past three years, or hold a relevant two- or four-year degree. Detailed documentation of your experience and CE is required during the application process, which is reviewed and approved by the VHMA's Certification Board.

The CVPM exam is a computer-based test consisting of approximately 200 multiple-choice questions, to be completed within a 4-hour testing period. Questions are application-based, presenting real-world scenarios that require you to analyze information and select the best course of action. The exam is weighted across the five core domains: Human Resources (~25%), Financial Management (~25%), Marketing & Communications (~15%), Law & Ethics (~20%), and Daily Operations (~15%). A scaled scoring system is used, with a passing score determined through psychometric analysis.

The CVPM credential is valid for three years. To maintain certification, holders must earn a minimum of 45 hours of approved continuing education (CE) within each three-year cycle. These CE hours must be specifically related to the five exam domains of veterinary practice management. Detailed logs and proof of attendance must be submitted to the VHMA for audit. This requirement ensures CVPMs stay current with evolving best practices, technologies, and regulations in the field.
