While formal prerequisites are not always mandated, successful candidates typically possess 12-24 months of practical experience in an IT support or operations role, or have completed foundational coursework in computer science or information technology. A strong grasp of basic computer literacy, operating systems, and networking concepts is essential before attempting the exam.

The CIT is a broader, foundational certification that covers a wider range of IT fundamentals, including not only hardware and software (like A+) but also introductory networking, security, cloud concepts, and systems administration principles. It is designed as a comprehensive starting point that provides the base knowledge for more specialized paths, whereas A+ is heavily focused on technical support and IT operational roles.

The CIT exam typically consists of 80-90 multiple-choice, performance-based, and drag-and-drop questions to be completed in 90 minutes. Performance-based items test your ability to solve problems in a simulated environment. The scoring is scaled, with a passing score usually around 720-750 on a scale of 100-900. Official scoring criteria are provided by the certifying body.

The CIT certification is generally valid for three years. To maintain active status, professionals must earn a specified number of Continuing Education Units (CEUs) through activities such as attending training, completing higher-level certifications, publishing relevant work, or participating in professional IT events. Alternatively, retaking the current exam before expiration is an option.

The CIT certification is highly relevant for roles including IT Support Specialist, Help Desk Technician, Junior Systems Administrator, Network Support Technician, Technical Support Analyst, and IT Operations Associate.
