While formal prerequisites are not always mandatory, it is strongly recommended that candidates possess a bachelor's degree in a health-related field (e.g., public health, kinesiology, nutrition) OR a minimum of two years of full-time professional experience in health promotion, wellness coordination, or a related role. This ensures candidates have the foundational knowledge necessary for exam success and practical application of the credential.

The HTYH certification is valid for three years from the date of issuance. To maintain the credential, certificants must earn a minimum of 30 continuing education units (CEUs) in health promotion and wellness topics during each three-year cycle and submit a renewal application with applicable fees. This process ensures professionals remain current with evolving industry standards, research, and best practices.

The exam is a computer-based test consisting of 100 multiple-choice and multiple-select questions. Candidates are allotted 2 hours (120 minutes) to complete the assessment. The questions are designed to test application and analysis, not just recall, and are drawn proportionally from the key domains outlined in the official exam blueprint.

While there is overlap, the HTYH certification has a broader scope focused on population health and programmatic interventions. It emphasizes designing, implementing, and evaluating wellness programs for groups and organizations, alongside one-on-one coaching techniques. A health coach credential may focus more intensively on individual client behavior change protocols. HTYH is ideal for professionals managing workplace or community-wide initiatives.
