You must achieve a score of 70% or higher to pass the exam. The test consists of 71 questions, so you must answer at least 50 questions correctly.

You should also be familiar with the relevant sections of Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations (14 CFR), particularly Parts 65 and 105. No, you do not need logged packing experience to take the written knowledge test. However, to complete your certification, you must pass this written exam and then perform a practical demonstration of your skills (packing, inspection, repair) under the supervision of an FAA Designated Parachute Rigger Examiner (DPRE). The knowledge test is the prerequisite first step.

Once you pass the knowledge test, the results are valid for 24 calendar months. You must complete the practical portion of the certification (the oral and practical test with a DPRE) within this two-year period, or you will be required to retake and pass the written knowledge test again.

The same 71-question knowledge test is used for both Senior and Master Rigger applicants. The distinction comes during the practical phase. A Senior Rigger candidate demonstrates proficiency on a single type of parachute (e.g., back, chest, or seat). A Master Rigger candidate must demonstrate proficiency on at least three main types of parachutes (back, chest, and seat) and prove extensive experience and knowledge in repairs and alterations.
