FE Other Disciplines Examination (NCEES) Practice Test

This exam is intended for graduates or soon-to-be graduates of ABET-accredited engineering programs in disciplines not covered by a dedicated FE exam (e.g., Agricultural, Chemical, Environmental, Industrial, Manufacturing, Nuclear, and other engineering fields). It is also suitable for practicing engineers in these fields who have not yet taken the FE exam and wish to pursue professional licensure.

The FE Other Disciplines exam is a computer-based test (CBT) consisting of 110 multiple-choice questions. Candidates are allotted 5 hours and 20 minutes total, which includes a brief tutorial, the exam itself, and an optional scheduled break. The exam is administered year-round at approved Pearson VUE test centers.

The only reference material allowed is the NCEES FE Reference Handbook, which is provided digitally during the exam. It is critical to become thoroughly familiar with this handbook during your preparation, as knowing how to quickly locate formulas and data is essential for efficient test-taking. No personal notes, paper, or calculators not on the NCEES approved list are permitted.

Passing the FE exam is the first of two steps required for PE licensure in the United States. After passing the FE, you must typically complete four years of progressive engineering experience under a licensed PE. You then become eligible to sit for the Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) exam in your specific discipline. Successfully completing both exams and meeting experience requirements grants you the PE license.

Effective preparation involves a multi-stage approach: 1) Obtain and review the official NCEES exam specification to understand the topic weightings. 2) Acquire and meticulously study the NCEES FE Reference Handbook. 3) Use comprehensive review materials, textbooks, and online courses to refresh knowledge in all specified areas. 4) Complete numerous practice problems and full-length practice exams under timed conditions to build speed, accuracy, and familiarity with the exam format.
