FEMA ICS-100 Introduction to Incident Command System Practice Test

The primary audience includes first responders, emergency management personnel, public health and public works staff, hospital emergency planners, non-governmental organization volunteers, and any individual who may have a role in incident response. It is essential for personnel from all response disciplines and levels of government who may be called upon to function within an ICS structure.

For many positions in federal, state, and local emergency response agencies, as well as for certain types of federal disaster deployment (e.g., with FEMA or other federal teams), ICS-100 certification is a mandatory prerequisite. Many local and state jurisdictions also require it for emergency operations center staff and incident management team members.

ICS-100 is the entry point in the National Incident Management System (NIMS) ICS training curriculum. It is a prerequisite for higher-level courses such as ICS-200, ICS-300, and ICS-400, which cover more advanced applications for expanding incidents, command and general staff complexities, and multi-agency coordination.

The course is typically offered online through the FEMA Independent Study Program (IS-100.c) and includes interactive modules, case studies, and a final exam. The exam is usually multiple-choice and is taken online immediately following the course material. A passing score (typically around 75%) is required to receive the official certificate from FEMA's Emergency Management Institute (EMI).

FEMA does not currently set an expiration date for the ICS-100 certificate. However, it is considered a baseline knowledge requirement. Agencies or employers may require refresher training or proof of higher-level ICS certifications for specific roles or deployments, and best practice suggests periodic review, especially if operational protocols are updated.
