Google officially recommends 3+ years of industry experience, including over 1 year of hands-on experience designing and managing solutions using Google Cloud. Candidates should be proficient in at least one general-purpose programming language and have extensive experience with cloud-native application development, APIs, data storage, and operational management.

While there is overlap, the Cloud Developer certification is distinctly focused on the application development lifecycle. Architects concentrate on overall infrastructure design and business solutions, and DevOps Engineers on CI/CD, operations, and site reliability. The Developer exam dives deeper into implementation details, code, APIs, developer tools (like Cloud Code, Skaffold), application modernization, and integrating GCP services directly into applications.

The exam consists of 50-60 multiple-choice and multiple-select questions to be completed within 2 hours. It is delivered online via remote proctoring or at a test center. Google does not publish an official passing score, as it is scaled and may vary. The focus is on performance across different domains rather than a simple percentage.

Key focus areas include designing highly available and scalable applications, choosing appropriate data storage options (Cloud SQL, Firestore, Bigtable, etc.), securing applications using IAM and Identity-Aware Proxy, implementing CI/CD pipelines with Cloud Build and Cloud Deploy, and leveraging managed services like Cloud Run, App Engine, and GKE for deployment. Hands-on practice with these services is indispensable.

The certification is valid for two years from the date of issuance. To renew, you must pass the current version of the exam or complete a specified continuing education program offered by Google Cloud, which typically involves online skill assessments or courses to demonstrate your knowledge is up-to-date with the latest platform features and best practices.
