Preguntas Frecuentes

What is the minimum score needed to pass the exam?

To pass the Goethe-Zertifikat C1, you must achieve a minimum of 60 points out of 100. However, you must also score at least 60% of the points available in each of the four modules (Reading, Listening, Writing, Speaking). This means you cannot compensate for a very weak performance in one section with a very strong performance in another.

How long is the certificate valid?

The Goethe-Zertifikat C1 is valid for life. Unlike some other language certificates, it does not expire. Your certified language proficiency at the C1 level is considered a permanent achievement.

Can I use a dictionary during the exam?

No, the use of any external aids, including dictionaries, electronic devices, or notes, is strictly prohibited during all parts of the examination. The exam is designed to assess your independent language ability.

How is the speaking module conducted?

The speaking test is typically conducted with a partner. It consists of three parts: a monologue presentation based on given information, a joint discussion and decision-making task with your partner, and a follow-up discussion on a related topic. You are assessed on your fluency, coherence, range and accuracy of vocabulary and grammar, and interactive communication skills.

How long should I prepare if I am currently at a B2 level?

The transition from B2 to C1 is significant and typically requires substantial study. For a learner with a solid B2 foundation, a dedicated preparation period of 6 to 9 months, involving several hours of study per week, is a realistic timeframe. This depends greatly on the intensity of your study and your opportunities for immersion.
