The LFCS is exclusively a hands-on, performance-based exam that tests your ability to execute commands and solve problems in a real shell environment. The LFCS is often regarded as more directly reflective of job-ready skills because it requires actual task completion. The Linux+ may be better for those seeking a broad overview, while the LFCS is ideal for proving practical, operational competency.

At the time of registration, you must select one of several major distributions on which to be tested (e.g., Ubuntu, CentOS, openSUSE). The core concepts and tasks are identical, but the specific package management commands (apt vs. yum/dnf vs. zypper) and some configuration file locations will differ. Your choice should align with the distribution you are most comfortable with or the one used in your target work environment. The underlying skills are transferable, but fluency with your chosen distribution's tools is crucial for exam efficiency.

The Linux Foundation recommends 1-3 years of experience working with Linux systems.
