The Rapid Developer certification validates foundational skills in building basic Mendix applications. The Intermediate Developer certification, however, assesses your ability to handle complex, enterprise-grade scenarios. It covers advanced topics like inheritance in domain models, complex microflow logic with error handling, REST/SOAP/OData integrations, and granular security configurations. Passing the Intermediate exam proves you can architect and build sophisticated solutions independently, not just follow basic tutorials.

For the integration section, you must have a strong grasp of consuming and exposing REST services, including handling different authentication methods (e.g., basic, token), message definitions, and error handling. You should understand SOAP web services and WSDL structures, as well as OData for exposing Mendix data. Key concepts include import/export mappings, microflow-based integrations, and the use of the Call REST and Call Web Service activities. Practical experience with JSON and XML structures is essential.

Security is tested through scenario-based questions that require you to implement role-based access control (RBAC) at the module, entity, and attribute levels. You must understand how to create and apply user roles, module roles, and entity access rules. The exam also covers XPath constraints for limiting data visibility, the use of security policies for microflows and pages, and the implications of different access modes (e.g., read, write, create, delete). You should be able to design a security model that meets complex business requirements.

While there are no formal prerequisites, Mendix strongly recommends that candidates have at least 6-12 months of hands-on development experience with the Mendix Platform. You should have completed at least one full project lifecycle, from requirements gathering to deployment. Completing the Mendix Rapid Developer Certification is highly recommended as a foundation. Practical experience with the topics listed in the official exam blueprint is far more valuable than theoretical study alone.

The exam is a proctored, online multiple-choice and multiple-select test. It typically consists of 50 questions, and you are given a specific time limit (usually around 90 minutes) to complete it. The questions are scenario-based, requiring you to apply your knowledge to practical situations. You will need a stable internet connection and a webcam for the proctoring process. A passing score is required to earn the certification.
