MSNCB Certified Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse (CMSRN) Practice Test

Candidates must hold a current, active, unrestricted RN license in the United States or its territories. Additionally, a minimum of two years (full-time or equivalent) of practice as an RN in an adult medical-surgical setting is required. An RN license is a legal requirement to practice, establishing minimum competency. The CMSRN is a voluntary, specialty credential that validates advanced knowledge, clinical judgment, and expertise specifically in adult medical-surgical nursing. The CMSRN exam is a computer-based test consisting of 150 multiple-choice questions. Of these, 125 are scored, and 25 are unscored pretest questions. Candidates have 3 hours to complete the exam. CMSRN certification is valid for five years. Recertification can be achieved through one of two pathways: 1) Retaking and passing the CMSRN examination, or 2) Earning a minimum of 90 contact hours of continuing education in medical-surgical nursing and fulfilling a practice requirement (1,000 hours in medical-surgical nursing within the five-year cycle).
