NBDHE National Board Dental Hygiene Examination Practice Test

The NBDHE is a computer-based exam comprising two parts. Part A (200 items) covers the scientific basis for dental hygiene practice, including anatomical sciences, biochemistry, nutrition, microbiology, pharmacology, and pathology. Part B (150 items) focuses on clinical dental hygiene, including patient assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation, and professional responsibility. A significant portion of Part B utilizes case-based items where you analyze patient scenarios and apply your knowledge to make clinical decisions.

Applications are submitted through the JCNDE website. You must first establish eligibility, typically through graduation or imminent graduation from an accredited dental hygiene program. Once your application is approved, you will receive an authorization to test (ATT) letter from the JCNDE, which you then use to schedule your exam appointment at a Pearson VUE professional testing center. The NBDHE uses a scaled scoring system. The passing scaled score is 75. Results are reported as "Pass" or "Fail" and are typically available through your JCNDE account approximately three to four weeks after your test date. Official score reports are sent directly to the state licensing boards you designated during the application process.

The validity period of an NBDHE score is determined by individual state licensing boards, not the JCNDE. Most states accept scores indefinitely, but some may have a time limit (e.g., scores must be less than 5 or 10 years old). You must verify the specific requirements with the dental board in each state where you seek licensure.
