NCCCO Rigger Level II Written Practice Test

Rigger Level I focuses on basic hitches, sling tension calculations, and simple load weight estimation. Level II requires you to calculate complex center of gravity for asymmetrical loads, design multi-leg bridle systems, and understand load share in tandem lifts. This practice test assumes you already know Level I material and builds on it with advanced hardware selection and regulatory compliance.

You should be familiar with key OSHA 1926 Subpart CC sections (e.g., 1926.1401 definitions, 1926.1425 for keeping loads clear, and 1926.1434 for multi-crane lifts) and ASME B30.9 (slings) and B30.5 (mobile cranes). You will not be asked to quote exact paragraph numbers, but you must know the requirements, such as sling inspection intervals, proof testing, and when a lift plan is mandatory.

These questions typically present a load weight, two or more cranes with different capacities, and a configuration (e.g., cranes at different radii). You must calculate the load share on each crane, verify that no crane exceeds 75% of its rated capacity (per OSHA for critical lifts), and determine if the lift is safe. Some questions require you to account for dynamic factors or off-center pick points.

For the official NCCCO Rigger Level II exam, non-programmable calculators are typically allowed. For this practice test, we recommend using a basic scientific calculator to work through load angle factors, sine/cosine for sling angles, and weight distribution calculations. Do not rely on phone apps during the actual exam.

The most common error is misidentifying the center of gravity for a load that is not symmetrical. Many test-takers assume the center of gravity is at the geometric center, but Level II questions often involve loads with offset weight distribution (e.g., a tank with internal baffles or a machine with a heavy motor on one end).
