NCLEX-PN - Practical Nurse Licensing Examination Practice Test

The NCLEX-PN uses Computerized Adaptive Testing (CAT). The exam length is variable, with a minimum of 85 questions and a maximum of 205. The test continues until the computer can determine with 95% confidence whether your ability is above or below the passing standard. The format includes multiple-choice questions (the majority) as well as alternate item types such as multiple response (select all that apply), fill-in-the-blank (calculations), ordered response, and hot spot (clicking on an image). You have up to 5 hours to complete the exam, which includes a pre-test tutorial and optional breaks.

The exam is organized into four major Client Needs categories, as defined by the NCSBN test plan: Safe and Effective Care Environment (Coordinating Care 18-24%, Safety and Infection Control 10-16%), Health Promotion and Maintenance (6-12%), Psychosocial Integrity (9-15%), and Physiological Integrity (Basic Care and Comfort 7-13%, Pharmacological Therapies 10-16%, Reduction of Risk Potential 9-15%, Physiological Adaptation 7-13%). These categories encompass all integrated processes of nursing, including clinical judgment, caring, communication, and teaching/learning.

Move beyond memorization. Focus on understanding the 'why' behind nursing actions. Practice with high-quality, NCLEX-style questions that require you to prioritize care, recognize cues, analyze data, and evaluate outcomes. Utilize the NCSBN's Clinical Judgment Measurement Model (NCJMM) as a guide. When reviewing questions, critically analyze both correct and incorrect rationales. Simulate real-world thinking by asking yourself: 'What is the immediate threat to the patient?' and 'Which action will have the greatest impact on a positive outcome?' Developing this analytical mindset is key to success on the adaptive exam.

The NCLEX-PN is pass/fail; you do not receive a numerical score. You must answer enough questions correctly to stay above the passing standard line with 95% confidence. The passing standard is periodically reevaluated by the NCSBN based on the difficulty of questions and the current expectations for entry-level practice. The exam uses a logit scale to measure ability. Your results are determined solely by whether your final ability estimate, based on your pattern of correct and incorrect answers, is above the established passing standard. You will receive your official results from your state board of nursing, typically within a few weeks.

If you are unsuccessful, you will receive a Candidate Performance Report (CPR) that outlines your performance relative to the test plan's Client Needs categories. This diagnostic tool is invaluable for targeting your study efforts before re-testing. All state boards allow candidates to retake the exam, but there is a mandatory waiting period (typically 45 days) between attempts, and you must re-register and pay the fee again. It is crucial to analyze your CPR, adjust your study plan, consider additional review resources or strategies, and focus on your areas of lower performance before scheduling a retest.
