NCLEX-RN Nursing License Exam Practice Test

The NCLEX-RN uses Computerized Adaptive Testing (CAT). The exam length is variable, with a minimum of 75 questions and a maximum of 145. The test continues until the computer can determine with 95% confidence whether your ability is above or below the passing standard. It represents the minimum ability required for safe, entry-level practice. The standard is reviewed every three years. Your performance is not compared to other test-takers but is measured against this fixed standard. The computer determines a pass/fail result based on whether your final ability estimate exceeds this standard with statistical certainty.

Yes. Candidates who do not pass can retake the exam. The NCSBN and individual state boards of nursing have specific policies regarding waiting periods (typically 45 days) and the maximum number of attempts allowed within a given timeframe. You must re-apply and pay the fee again. It is highly recommended to undertake a thorough analysis of your performance and engage in targeted remediation before re-testing.

Focus on application, not just memorization. You must know drug classifications, expected effects, side effects, adverse reactions, and contraindications for major medication groups. Crucially, practice questions that require nursing interventions: monitoring parameters, patient education, calculating dosages, and evaluating therapeutic effectiveness. Understand IV therapy principles, including flow rates, site care, and management of complications like infiltration or phlebitis. Prioritize safety (e.g., the rights of medication administration, high-alert medications) above all.
