The ASBOG(R) Fundamentals of Geology (FG) exam is a 4-hour, closed-book, multiple-choice test consisting of approximately 120-140 questions. The exam is typically administered in a pencil-and-paper format at designated testing centers twice per year, in the spring and fall.

Most states require candidates to pass both the FG and PG exams, along with meeting experience requirements, to obtain the full Professional Geologist license.

The passing score is established by ASBOG(R) and the state boards using psychometric analysis and can vary slightly between exam administrations. Scores are reported on a scaled basis. Your state board will notify you of your pass/fail status. Raw scores or specific numerical cut-offs are not typically disclosed to candidates.
