RHIT - Registered Health Information Technician Practice Test

To be eligible for the RHIT exam, you must have successfully completed the academic requirements of an Associate Degree from a Health Information Management (HIM) program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM). Alternatively, you may be eligible if you hold a degree from a foreign HIM program approved by AHIMA. Proof of graduation or completion is required. There is no direct work experience prerequisite, as the exam tests the knowledge and skills acquired through the accredited academic program.

The RHIT exam is a computer-based test consisting of 130 multiple-choice questions, of which 20 are unscored pretest items. Candidates have 3.5 hours to complete the exam. The questions are based on the official exam blueprint, which organizes content into six domains: Data Content, Structure & Standards (Information Governance); Information Protection: Access, Disclosure, Archival, Privacy & Security; Informatics, Analytics & Data Use; Revenue Cycle Management; Health Law & Compliance; and Organizational Management & Leadership. The exam employs a variety of question types, including standalone items and scenario-based sets.

The key distinction lies in the educational preparation and typical career scope. The RHIT is an associate-degree-level credential focused on the technical aspects of health information management, such as coding, data analysis, privacy compliance, and revenue cycle support. RHITs are often hands-on technicians and specialists. The RHIA (Registered Health Information Administrator) is a bachelor's-degree-level credential with a broader focus on administrative and managerial functions, including department leadership, information governance strategy, advanced analytics, and system implementation. While there is overlap, the RHIA prepares professionals for more strategic, leadership-oriented roles.

The RHIT credential provides deep, specialized knowledge critical to revenue cycle integrity. Certified professionals are experts in clinical classification systems (ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT), which are the foundation for accurate billing and reimbursement. They understand the impact of coding quality on DRG assignment, case mix index, and denial rates. Their training in compliance, regulatory guidelines, and data quality ensures claims are clean, complete, and defensible. This makes RHITs invaluable assets in roles such as coding supervisor, clinical documentation improvement (CDI) specialist, reimbursement analyst, and patient financial services coordinator, directly linking data accuracy to financial performance.

To maintain the RHIT credential, you must complete a minimum of 20 continuing education units (CEUs) every two years during your recertification cycle. These CEUs must be relevant to the health information management field and can be earned through various activities, including attending workshops/webinars, completing academic courses, publishing articles, or participating in professional service. A minimum number of CEUs must be in the area of privacy and security. You must also adhere to AHIMA's Code of Ethics and pay an annual maintenance fee.
