RS: Registered Sanitarian Examination Practice Test

Eligibility is primarily based on a combination of education and professional experience. The standard requirement is a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution with at least 30 semester hours in science, plus a minimum of two years of full-time environmental health experience. NEHA also offers alternative pathways for candidates with associate degrees or extensive experience. All applicants must submit an official application with transcripts and verified experience documentation for NEHA's review and approval before being authorized to schedule the exam.

The RS Exam is a computer-adaptive test (CAT) comprising 132 scored questions, with an additional 15 unscored pretest questions. Candidates have 3 hours to complete the exam. It covers domains outlined in the official exam blueprint, including Food Protection, Wastewater, Solid & Hazardous Waste, Water Quality, and others. The passing score is set using industry-standard psychometric methods and is reported on a scaled score range. A score of 650 or higher is required to pass. Results are provided immediately upon exam completion at the testing center.

Effective preparation involves a multi-faceted approach. First, thoroughly review the official RS Exam Blueprint, which details all test domains and subtopics. Utilize primary resources such as the 'Principles of Environmental Health' textbook and current federal and state regulations (e.g., FDA Food Code, EPA standards). NEHA offers a recommended reading list and practice exams. Many candidates benefit from forming study groups, attending review workshops, and gaining hands-on experience in various environmental health program areas. Dedicate several months to systematic study, focusing on your weaker knowledge areas.

The RS credential requires ongoing professional development to maintain. Credential holders must earn a minimum of 24 continuing education contact hours (CECHs) every two-year renewal cycle. These hours must be relevant to environmental health and can be obtained through conferences, workshops, college courses, webinars, and other NEHA-approved activities. Documentation of CECHs must be submitted with the renewal application and fee. This maintenance requirement ensures Registered Sanitarians stay current with evolving science, technology, and regulations in the field.

The RS is the most widely recognized national credential in environmental health. Many state and local health departments require or give preferential hiring status to RS holders, and it is often mandated for directors or supervisors of environmental health programs. Some states use the RS exam to fulfill their own state licensing or registration requirements.
