SAFe LPM Lean Portfolio Management Practice Test

There are no strict prerequisites for taking the exam itself; anyone can register. However, it is highly recommended and considered essential for success to first attend the official two-day SAFe(R) Lean Portfolio Management course. This course provides the foundational knowledge, context, and insights from an accredited instructor that are critical for passing the advanced exam. Additionally, practical experience in portfolio management, Agile practices, or Lean thinking is strongly advised.

The exam is a closed-book, web-based test consisting of 60 multiple-choice questions. Candidates have 120 minutes (2 hours) to complete it. To pass, you must correctly answer at least 45 out of the 60 questions, resulting in a passing score of 75%. The questions are designed to test both your knowledge of the SAFe LPM competency areas and your ability to apply that knowledge in practical scenarios.

While PO/PM and Scrum Master certifications focus on team and program-level execution, the LPM certification operates at the strategic portfolio level. It deals with connecting enterprise strategy to execution through value streams, Lean budgeting, portfolio canvas, and Epic ownership. LPM is less about facilitating team events and more about strategic alignment, investment funding, and Lean governance. It is designed for leaders and influencers who shape the portfolio, whereas other certifications target those delivering within it.

The SAFe LPM certification is valid for one year from the date of issuance. To renew, you must earn 60 Continuing Education/Professional Development Units (PDUs) and pay a renewal fee. PDUs can be earned through various activities related to Agile, Lean, or SAFe, such as attending relevant training, webinars, conferences, or contributing to the community. Renewing your certification demonstrates your ongoing commitment to staying current in the field.

The SAFe LPM certification is most relevant for senior professionals involved in strategic planning and investment oversight. Key roles include Portfolio Managers, Enterprise Architects, Value Stream Managers, Agile Coaches/Consultants at the enterprise level, VPs/Directors of Product Management, PMO Leaders, and Business Executives (CIOs, CTOs, VPs of Engineering) who are responsible for aligning Agile execution with business strategy and financial outcomes.
