ServiceNow strongly recommends, but does not strictly enforce, the following prerequisites: completion of the official 'HR Service Delivery Implementation' instructor-led or on-demand course, and foundational platform knowledge (often validated by the Certified System Administrator (CSA) certification). Most importantly, candidates should have 6-12 months of hands-on experience configuring and implementing the HR Service Delivery application on the ServiceNow platform to be successful.

The Certified System Administrator (CSA) validates core platform administration skills applicable to any ServiceNow application. The Certified Application Developer (CAD) focuses on advanced scripting, application scoping, and development. The CIS-HR is a functional specialist certification that applies that foundational knowledge specifically to the HR Service Delivery application. It tests your ability to implement HR-specific workflows, configure the Employee Service Center, manage lifecycle events, and apply HR-centric security, which are not covered in depth in the CSA or CAD.

The CIS-HR exam typically consists of 60 multiple-choice and multiple-select questions to be completed within 90 minutes. The passing score is determined by ServiceNow using a scaled scoring model and is subject to change, but it generally falls within a rigorous range. The exam is proctored and can be taken online or at a testing center. Questions are heavily scenario-based, requiring you to choose the best configuration or solution for a given HR business requirement.

A multi-faceted approach is most effective: 1) Complete the official ServiceNow training course. 2) Gain extensive hands-on practice in a Personal Developer Instance (PDI), replicating configurations for Case Management, Knowledge, Lifecycle Events, and the Employee Service Center. 3) Meticulously review the official exam blueprint, ensuring you understand each listed topic. 4) Utilize ServiceNow documentation and release notes for the HR application. 5) Participate in community forums and study groups to discuss complex scenarios with other professionals.

The CIS-HR certification is valid for two years from the date you pass the exam. To maintain your certified status, you must accumulate a required number of Continuing Education (CE) credits through activities such as completing additional ServiceNow training, attending approved events (like Knowledge or user group meetings), or contributing to the community (e.g., writing articles, presenting). Alternatively, you may re-take and pass the current version of the exam before your certification expires.
